Barbara Benedetti Newton

Artist Statement

Regardless of medium or subject, the focus of my work is always light: bright and bold or nuanced and mysterious. The longer I paint, the more abstracted my work becomes. Simplification and the essence of a scene is my goal. I continue to try to tell the story with less information just enough to invite the viewer in to make the scene and the story their own.

Through writing articles for art magazines, teaching, videos, and Dockton Art Studio on Instagram, I enjoy sharing with others what I have learned during my long art journey.

Barbara attended Burnley School of Professional Art and began work as a fashion illustrator. A move to Vashon and 16 years at K2 resulted in a 20-year sabbatical from art until she discovered a love for colored pencil and embarked on a decade of still-life work. In 2002, pastel became her primary medium for impressionistic landscapes. Recent work is oil or acrylic though she frequently returns to pastel. Barbara has taught extensively and authored art instruction books in colored pencil and pastel. She is active in local, national, and international art organizations and is represented by several galleries and venues online.
