Bill Cleaver

Artist Statement

The new sculpture and assemblage work that I have been creating over the past five years has been a true departure for me and a real joy - 35 years of leather technique I can run with and no boundaries. Inspired by Joseph Cornell and my personal love of found objects and collecting, by the serenity of Buddhas and the playful intelligence of crows, I'm having such fun stretching my traditional medium in unexpected directions, with more to come.

Bill''s medium is leather and has been for the past four decades. A passion for history and the cowboy period in the American West initially drew him to the techniques and aesthetics that are the foundation of his work. Self-taught, he began creating historically correct cowboy gear in the 1980s, which led to custom work for advertising, film and fashion - including runway designs for Ralph Lauren and leather accessories for the Marlboro man in the 1990s.
