Kathy Raines
Artist Statement
After trying and discarding many jewelry-making techniques, I discovered the art of wirework. Rather than trying to control the wire, it works best when I dont force a design. Instead, I let the wire dictate what it wants to be and help bring it to life.
Patterns in rocks and sand, the movement of wind in trees, and swirling designs in ever-changing water all encourage new designs and techniques. The ideas flow into my mind as I shape and weave the metal. This process is slow, interactive, and meditative. Every movement is an experiment, building upon the one that came before it. Each design is meant to encourage, uplift, and bring confidence to those wearing it.

Kathy has been making jewelry for more than 25 years. While primarily self-taught, she has also had opportunities to learn from highly-regarded jewelry artists. Her love of weaving with metal is a direct result of intensive classes taught by Arline Fisch, an innovator in adapting textile techniques for metal and wire jewelry. The organic nature of Alexander Calders art jewelry also influences her.
Kathys latest collections feature gemstones, sterling and fine silver, 14k gold-filled wire, chain maille, and wire weaving and knitting. Every piece of jewelry created perfectly blends her distinctive sense of style and fun.
