Marla Smith

Artist Statement

I make everyday ware that is as useful as wheel thrown pots but not traditional. What is traditional and beloved is the clarity and strength of porcelain and how like canvas it is for true colors. While making my pots from rolled out slabs, I touch the clay constantly yet there are no finger prints visible when fired and finished. I want my pots to look as if they just appeared; and the method-of-making doesn't come to mind. My intent is that they feel good when folks use them and live with them.

Marla came to the island in 1973 to take over a pottery with a potter friend and mentor. As a young, enthralled potter who thought that her life's path had been found, she worked full time for a decade in clay and veered off that passionate path to pursue Waldorf Education degrees.

Back to clay after 30 years, she took up again with handbuilding porcelain, making ware; pots that are non-traditional yet made to use everyday.
