Mary Shemeta

Artist Statement

My work is heavily influenced by my love of nature and natural patterns. You will frequently find leaf patterns, vines or flowers running the length of my garments. I love strong vibrant colors and often aim to pack in as much color as possible in tiny details like leaves. Using fibers that are biodegradable and recycled is important to me. My current work uses a lot of wool, recycled Sari silk, and silk yarns. I dye my own silk fabric to use as a base for my Nuno felt work.

Mary has worked as a fiber and fabric artist since 1997. She hand-dyes various fabrics and fibers, and designs and sews clothes and other pieces. Mary has sold at juried art shows all over the country. She is now inspired by the ability to create her own fabric from scratch via felting. Felting feeds her love of experimentation and each piece is unique. Now her work is made by combining needle felting, wet felting and Nuno felting together to create artistic wearables.
