Nancy Putney
Artist Statement
As a Realist and Illustrator, it is my hope that viewers of my work find the images believable and therein a sense of place. I would like to know that the flat surface has become lifelike, that eyes, fur and feathers, leaf veins, and blades of grass speak in an intimate way. It is my wish that a person would be moved to look longer and more closely, to wonder what the creature portrayed might be thinking or how the air of the place might feel. If a painting or drawing can open such an awareness and wonder, there is a chance that the real world of Nature can be more prized and protected.

Nancy Putney grew up in Colorado, spending much of her time exploring the Rocky Mountains, gathering stones, pine cones, photographing animals and landscapes, sowing seeds and growing vegetables. It is no mystery that her art-making centers on nature and the natural environments that surround her. She embraces and takes delight in a broad variety of media: watercolor, acrylics, pen and ink, pastels and color pencil. Putney is best known for her montage style paintings and murals and has illustrated several books. She has received national and international awards for her poster designs and book illustrations, exhibited her artwork through Colorado and California, and has been a celebrated art educator for much of her career. She is grateful to now live in this magical place with her family and for being welcomed to the community of Vashon.
