Carly Reiter

Artist Statement

Since moving to Vashon, I have been inspired to embrace my natural rustic tendencies and towards all-things-quirky. Most of my most recent panels use cedar off-cuts from Vashons LS Cedar, and its been gratifying to watch the beauty of this thinly sliced scrap wood emerge as it's laminated against the colored and textured sheet glass. It has also been a joy to take each my pieces on adventurous photo shoots around Vashonto the places that inspired their creation. They have been on hikes to the beach, hung out over the rails of the ferry, strapped in with seatbelts as we bumped down the island backroads, and even swaddled into a dry bag on the deck of my kayak. As the beautiful PNW summer sunshine wanes, I hope each of my creations find homes where they can bring color and light to even the moodiest grey days.

Artist Bio

Carly is a stained glass artist and maker who recently moved to Vashon from West Seattle, via a five-year detour through San Francisco. She is a K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) educator who has always made a point of integrating Art into her STE(A)M curriculum. During the pandemic she returned to working with stained glass and discovered that she could mix traditional stained glass techniques with the same digital fabrication tools and skills she was using with her students to create a new type of lead-free stained glass art. Carly prefers to use repurposed glass and wood in her panels and is occasionally able to include urban foraged gems like the copper electromagnetics found inside discarded mechanical toys.
