Artist Statement
Landscape calls to me, structure intrigues me. Often I combine the two. I prefer to suggest rather than document a subject, sometimes completely making it up. I enjoy the play of light on surfaces and the mystery that lies where we cannot see. The painting that follows is an adventure in perception.

Jan worked in graphic design, illustration and teaching after earning 2 college degrees at the University of Washington. Important learnings followed from studying with other artists who are really good at what they do. To them she owes a great debt.
Jan always loved drawing and thought she needed to paint with a brush to be taken seriously. When she discovered pastels about 25 years ago, she found the perfect blend. The sticks of pure pigment changed the course of her art life.
