Artist Statement

I like making forms that are simple and functional, stacking easily in the cupboard. Brightly painted food safe plates, bowls, mugs and tumblers are each unique, yet all related, making them fun to mix and match on the dinner table. I have fun on the banding wheel combining colors in new and dazzling ways, with brushwork that is repetitive but relaxed. These pots are fired to cone 03 in an electric kiln.

A note about earthenware (also known as low-fire): Hand wash for optimum durability, but these dishes are dishwasher and microwave safe. Terracotta pieces (red clay) are great to bake in. The glaze on most earthenware pots will eventually craze. They are still totally food safe, and any staining can be removed by a soak in mild bleach water. Those of us potters who choose to work with earthenware appreciate its softness. We also love the bright colors that are possible when firing at these temperatures. In all cultures around the globe there are traditions of pottery formed from low fire clay, which is readily available and energy saving to fire.

Artist Bio

While my first experiences in clay involved wood kilns (Oberlin College), high fire reduction and the atmospheric effects of soda and salt (Castle Clay Co-op in Denver), my thirty-five years here on Vashon Island have focused on the development of a colorful line of wheel thrown earthenware pottery intended for daily use.
