Artist Statement
My grandfather was a rockhound. It is an uncurable disease that compels a person to travel and search for interesting rocks, and to spend endless hours slicing and shaping the rocks into gemstones to set in jewelry settings. He passed it on to me. Beginning when I was nine, Grampa taught me stonecutting techniques that I still use today. In school, I learned metalsmithing so I could create my own designs to compliment the gemstones I cut. After all this time I still love the excitement of cutting open a rock to discover the colors and patterns within it, and then to shape a gemstone from what nature created. I then have the honor of designing precious metal settings to compliment the stones, creating pieces of wearable art.
