Rose Belknap

Artist Statement

This body of work is a love letter to the natural world around me. When I look around at the budding trees, hear the bird songs, and see the way light changes in dense woods, I cant help but be inspired to paint. For me, the process of painting is like meditation. I enjoying puzzling out how to render the natural world in my favorite medium, oil paints. The inherent glow of oil paint enlivens my work and gives it an extra luminosity.

When dealing with pain or grief, watching a sunset can remind me that we are part of something bigger, and it gives me hope. In all of my work, I strive to create a feeling or suggest a story to the viewer. I hope my paintings inspire you to look at the natural world in a different and beautiful light.

Artist Bio

Rose uses color, refractive light and shapes to tell stories with her oil paintings. Her current work focuses on natures healing and uplifting beauty. Inspiration usually comes from the changing light of the seasons, when the natural wonders of Roses home, Vashon, are on full display.

For the last 47 years, Rose has made her home on Vashon. She arrived in the late 1970s and immediately knew she was home. Like many other long time homeowners on Vashon, Rose and her husband are still working on home improvements to this day. Rose graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986.
