Michelle Bates

Artist Statement

These images were made while on wanderings and road trips near and far. Michelle''s Holga camera is always her companion, to capture the wonder of nature, as well as more urban or cultural scenes. The black and white photographs are made on film, which is hand-processed, and the prints are made in the darkroom, using Michelle's unique negative carrier, on archival silver gelatin fiber-based paper.

The ""Queen of Hearts"" image is from the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade in Seattle, which Michelle has participated in and photographed since the early 1990s, along with many other community celebration arts events. The image was made on color film and printed in a color darkroom. The Queen was built and paraded by David Catherine Ti.
