Michelle Friars

Artist Statement

Floating Rocks is a series of photographs made in response to both the beauty and the uncertainty of life in a liminal state. It is as if we are suspended somewhere between before and after in a place where expectations have been upended and old assumptions no longer apply. There can be calm in the moment, yet it coexists with uneasiness, living indefinitely on a threshold between here and some unrealized there. Photographs from the Floating Rocks series have appeared in gallery shows nationally and were published in 2022 in the book Art in the Time of Corona.

Artist Bio

Michelle Friars is an artist and photographer who works both digitally and in carbon pencil and pan pastel. Trained as a visual artist, she got into photography to shoot reference photos for portrait commissions and to document other finished work. After a time, she discovered a penchant for taking photos as an artistic practice on its own. Her drawings and photographs have appeared in galleries and museums across the US and her photography has been selected for national publication in two books. Michelle also creates cards and prints through Parrot & Penguin Studio.
